Rwanda or Uganda for a gorilla trekking honeymoon?
Rwanda and Uganda share the Virunga volcanoes and are home to most of the world’s mountain gorillas. The encounter itself is equally extraordinary in both: a hike through montane forest with rangers, then up to an hour with a habituated gorilla family. The difference lies in everything around that hour — how long it takes to get there, how much you pay, where you sleep and what else you can see.

Travel time and logistics
Rwanda’s biggest advantage is proximity. You can land in Kigali, drive to Volcanoes National Park the same day, trek the next morning and be back in Kigali within three days. Roads are good and the country is compact. In Uganda, Bwindi is a long drive from Entebbe, so most honeymooners take a domestic flight to an airstrip near the park. Another option is to fly into Kigali and cross the border by road to Bwindi’s southern sectors, combining Rwanda’s easy access with Uganda’s lower permit fee.
Lodges and luxury
Rwanda has invested heavily in high-end tourism, and several of Africa’s most romantic lodges sit on the edge of Volcanoes National Park, with fireplaces, private decks and views of the volcanoes. Nyungwe and Akagera also have luxury options. Uganda has excellent gorilla lodges in Bwindi and a broader mid-range choice, but fewer ultra-luxury properties. Beyond the gorillas
Uganda offers the more varied safari: chimpanzee trekking in Kibale, boat trips and tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and the thundering Murchison Falls on the Nile. Which is cheaper?
Uganda is usually cheaper, mainly because of the permit: two Rwanda permits cost about US$3,000, compared with about US$1,600 in Uganda. Lodge prices in Uganda also tend to be lower. Best time to go
Both countries have similar climates. The drier months of June to September and December to February are best for trekking, with firmer trails and good conditions, and permits sell out months ahead. Yes. Bwindi’s southern sectors can be reached overland from Kigali, which combines Rwanda’s easier access with Uganda’s lower permit price. Check border and visa requirements first.
