Chimpanzee trekking is nothing like a quiet safari drive. Chimps are fast, loud and social: you hear them long before you see them, calling and drumming on tree roots, then watch them feeding, grooming and swinging through the canopy. What a chimpanzee trek is like
- Early start: a briefing at the park office in the early morning; in Nyungwe, treks can start very early.
- The walk: anything from under an hour to several hours through forest, following the chimps’ calls. They move quickly and often high in the trees.
- Your hour with them: once the group is found, you spend about an hour watching them, in a small group led by a ranger guide.
- Habituation experience (Kibale): spend most of the day with researchers and a chimp community as it wakes, feeds and nests — ideal for wildlife-loving couples.

Best time for chimpanzee trekking
Treks run year-round. The drier months of June to September and December to February make trails easier and are the most popular, so book permits early for those months. Tips for couples
- Wear proper footwear: waterproof hiking boots, long trousers and long sleeves protect against mud, nettles and insects.
- Bring binoculars: chimps are often high in the trees.
- Follow the rules: keep your distance, do not trek if you are unwell and follow ranger instructions. Minimum age limits apply.
- Plan the order: many couples trek chimps first, then gorillas, then relax on a beach.
- Stay nearby: a lodge close to the trailhead means a less punishing early start.
