Honeymoon in Rwanda

Rwanda is a small, green, startlingly organised country that has built its tourism around one thing: an hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family in the Virunga volcanoes. It costs US$1,500 per person for that hour, and it is the single most expensive wildlife experience in Africa. It is also, for most people who do it, the most affecting.

Budget US$12,000 to US$26,000 per couple for ten to twelve nights including flights. What makes Rwanda work as a honeymoon rather than just a trek is Lake Kivu — a large, high-altitude lake with no bilharzia, no crocodiles and no hippos, which means you can actually swim in it. Three or four days there afterwards turns a demanding trip into a genuine honeymoon.

Gorilla trekking, honestly

Permits are US$1,500 per person, capped at 96 per day across all groups, and they sell out months ahead for peak season. You are assigned a gorilla family based on fitness, hike to them — anything from 40 minutes to five hours through steep, muddy, high-altitude bamboo forest — and spend exactly one hour with them at roughly seven metres’ distance.

Things worth knowing before you commit:

• It is physically demanding. Volcanoes National Park sits at 2,500–3,000m and the terrain is steep and slippery. Reasonable fitness matters more than most operators will tell you.
• Hire a porter — around US$20. They carry your bag, haul you up the steep bits, and the money goes directly into communities around the park, which is a large part of why the gorillas still exist.
• Golden monkey trekking is a fraction of the price and a good second day.
• You will be wet and muddy. Waterproofs, gaiters and broken-in boots are not optional.

Beyond the gorillas

Lake Kivu

Safe swimming, kayaking, island hopping and hot springs, at altitude so it never gets oppressive. Rubavu (Gisenyi) and Karongi are the main bases. Three or four nights, and the reason Rwanda works as a honeymoon.

Nyungwe Forest

Ancient montane rainforest with chimpanzee tracking and a canopy walkway strung 70m above the forest floor. Chimp tracking is harder and less reliable than gorillas — they move fast and high — so treat it as a bonus rather than a guarantee.

Akagera National Park

Rwanda’s savannah park in the east, now a Big Five destination after successful lion and rhino reintroductions. Not the equal of the Serengeti, but it means Rwanda can offer gorillas, chimps, Big Five and a swimmable lake in one compact country.

Kigali

Genuinely one of Africa’s most pleasant capitals — clean, safe, good coffee and restaurants. Most couples spend a night either side. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is essential and extremely heavy; go, but consider carefully where you place it in a honeymoon itinerary rather than the day before you fly home.

Best time to go

Gorillas are trekked year-round — the rain affects how hard the hike is, not whether you see them. Sightings are close to guaranteed in any season.

What it costs

The permits alone are US$3,000 per couple for one trek each. Everything else in Rwanda is comparatively reasonable, so the permit is the number that shapes the trip. Many couples do two treks — the second is often better, because you know what to expect and spend the hour watching rather than processing.

Sample itineraries

Nine nights — gorillas and lake (from about US$12,500 per couple)

• Night 1: Kigali.
• Nights 2–4: Volcanoes NP — one gorilla trek, one golden monkey trek.
• Nights 5–8: Lake Kivu.
• Night 9: Kigali.

Twelve nights — the full country (from about US$19,000)

• Night 1: Kigali.
• Nights 2–5: Volcanoes NP — two gorilla treks.
• Nights 6–7: Lake Kivu.
• Nights 8–9: Nyungwe — chimps and the canopy walk.
• Nights 10–12: Akagera for Big Five.

Fourteen nights — Rwanda and the Kenyan coast (from about US$18,000)

• Nights 1–5: Gorillas and Lake Kivu.
• Nights 6–9: Fly to the Maasai Mara.
• Nights 10–14: Diani Beach.

That last shape is our favourite: gorillas are extraordinary but intense, and finishing on a beach is what makes it a honeymoon rather than an expedition.

Practical details

Getting there

Kigali International is well connected via Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Doha, Istanbul and Brussels, with RwandAir operating direct from London. Volcanoes National Park is a straightforward 2.5-hour drive on good tarred road — a real advantage over Uganda.

Visas and entry

Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival, or apply online in advance through the Rwandan immigration portal. The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda on one visa and is worth considering for multi-country trips. Confirm current requirements before travel.

Health

Malaria is present at lower altitudes including Akagera and Lake Kivu; the Virunga volcanoes are high enough to be lower risk. Yellow fever proof is required if arriving from a country with risk. Gorilla trekking requires you to be free of any transmissible illness — gorillas share our vulnerability to human respiratory viruses, and you can be turned away with a cold, permit unrefunded.

Fitness and kit

Waterproof jacket and trousers, gaiters, broken-in waterproof boots, gardening-weight gloves for grabbing vegetation, and a dry bag for your camera. Most good lodges lend gaiters and sticks.

Worth asking for

• Two treks rather than one if the budget stretches — the second is usually the better hour.
• Request an easier gorilla family at the morning briefing if either of you is unsure about the climb; families are allocated by fitness and they will listen.
• Always hire a porter. US$20, transformative on the hike, and the single most direct way your money reaches the communities protecting the park.
• Book permits before flights. They are capped and non-negotiable; everything else can flex around them.
