The reason is simple: you can have four nights in the Serengeti, a morning in the Ngorongoro Crater and a week on a white-sand Indian Ocean island, and never leave the country or deal with a second set of entry paperwork. The internal flight from the Serengeti to Zanzibar takes a couple of hours.

Where to go on a Tanzania honeymoon
The Serengeti
Bigger than Northern Ireland, and the wildebeest migration moves through it in a rough annual circle — which means where you stay matters as much as when you go. The southern plains around Ndutu hold the calving in January and February. The western corridor sees crossings around May and June. The northern Serengeti and the Mara River crossings peak from July to October. A good operator will place you in the right sector for your dates; a poor one will put you in a convenient camp and hope.
Ngorongoro Crater
A collapsed volcanic caldera holding around 25,000 animals in a bowl twenty kilometres across, including some of the last black rhino in the region. It is spectacular and it is busy — vehicle numbers on the crater floor are high. Treat it as one unmissable day rather than a multi-day stay, and stay on the rim, where the lodges have extraordinary views.
The southern circuit — Nyerere and Ruaha
Nyerere (formerly Selous) and Ruaha are far less visited than the north, cheaper, and offer boat safaris and walking safaris that the Serengeti cannot. For a couple who want wilderness and solitude over a checklist of famous names, this is the better half of Tanzania — and it connects to Zanzibar more easily than the north does.
Zanzibar and the islands

Getting there
Kilimanjaro International (JRO) serves the northern safari circuit and is the better arrival airport for a Serengeti-first itinerary. Dar es Salaam serves the south and Zanzibar. Zanzibar itself has an international airport with some direct European seasonal flights. Internal flights use small aircraft with a 15kg soft-bag limit per person.
Visas and entry
Most nationalities need a visa. UK, US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passport holders can obtain one on arrival or, better, apply for the e-visa in advance through the official Tanzanian immigration portal. US citizens are normally issued a multiple-entry visa at a higher fee. Apply in advance where you can — arrival queues after a long flight are not how you want to start. Health
Malaria is present across the safari areas and Zanzibar, and prophylaxis is normally recommended. Yellow fever proof is required if you are arriving from a country with yellow fever risk — which includes Kenya, so this matters for combined trips. Consult a travel clinic six to eight weeks before departure.
Zanzibar etiquette
Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim. Beachwear is fine at resorts and on resort beaches, but cover shoulders and knees in Stone Town and villages. During Ramadan many local restaurants close during daylight; resorts operate normally.
Worth asking for
- A private vehicle in the Serengeti — roughly US$300–500 per day, and the difference between your own pace and a shared schedule.
- A balloon safari over the Serengeti at dawn, around US$600 per person including a champagne breakfast. Expensive, and almost nobody regrets it.
- A mobile camp if you are travelling in migration season — these move with the herds and put you in the right place rather than a fixed lodge an hour away.
- Confirm park fees are included in writing before you pay a deposit.

Is Tanzania or Kenya better for a honeymoon?
