The best-value beach honeymoon in Africa — if you pick the right side of the island. Here is how to choose, what it costs, and the tide issue nobody warns you about.
Zanzibar does something no other African beach destination manages: genuinely beautiful white sand and warm turquoise water, at prices that are a fraction of Seychelles or Mauritius, ninety minutes from the Serengeti. That combination is why it appears on more African honeymoon itineraries than anywhere else.
It is not uniformly excellent, though, and the difference between a wonderful Zanzibar week and a disappointing one comes down almost entirely to which beach you book. That is the thing this page is really about.
Choosing your beach
Nungwi and Kendwa (north) — swimmable all day
The north tip has minimal tidal variation, so you can swim whenever you like. Kendwa is the calmer, more romantic of the two; Nungwi is busier with more bars and dive centres. Best sunsets on the island. If you want one recommendation for a first Zanzibar honeymoon, Kendwa.
Matemwe and Pwani Mchangani (north-east) — quiet and close to Mnemba
Some tidal effect but far less than further south, and it faces Mnemba Atoll, the best snorkelling and diving around the island. Quieter and more upmarket than the north tip.
Paje and Jambiani (south-east) — wide, wild, windy
Spectacular wide beaches, a young kitesurfing scene, excellent value. Strong tidal range and often windy from June to September. Great if you like the atmosphere; less good if you want still water and quiet.
Michamvi and Pingwe (east peninsula) — the luxury end
Several of the island’s best resorts, on a peninsula with west-facing sunset views, which is rare on the east coast. Strong tides on the eastern side.
Stone Town — one or two nights, not a week
A UNESCO World Heritage site and genuinely worth seeing: Swahili, Omani, Indian and Portuguese architecture in a maze of alleys, plus the sobering slave-trade history. It is a city, not a beach. Most couples do a night at the start or end.
Mnemba, Pemba and Mafia — if the budget allows
Mnemba Island is a private-island exclusive with twelve bandas and a price to match. Pemba is greener, quieter and has world-class diving. Mafia has whale sharks between roughly October and February.

June to October also lines up with the peak Serengeti and Maasai Mara season, which is why the safari-and-Zanzibar combination is so heavily booked in those months.

Getting there
Zanzibar (ZNZ) has direct seasonal flights from several European cities and frequent connections via Dar es Salaam, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Doha and Dubai. From the Serengeti it is a scheduled light-aircraft flight, usually with a stop.
Entry
Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so Tanzanian entry rules apply — most nationalities need a visa, best obtained as an e-visa in advance. Zanzibar additionally requires mandatory travel insurance purchased through its official scheme for most foreign visitors, at a modest per-person cost. This is separate from your own travel insurance, which you should still have. Check the current requirement before you travel, as it has changed more than once.
Health
Malaria is present. Prophylaxis is normally recommended — speak to a travel clinic.
Culture and dress
Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim and conservative outside resorts. Beachwear is fine on resort beaches; cover shoulders and knees in Stone Town, villages and local markets. Topless sunbathing is not acceptable. Alcohol is served at resorts but is not widely available elsewhere. During Ramadan, resorts operate normally but be discreet with eating and drinking in public.
Worth asking for
- A sunset dhow sail — inexpensive, and the best thing you will do that is not diving.
- A private beach dinner — most resorts offer this and many will do it as a honeymoon gesture if you tell them at booking.
- A Mnemba Atoll snorkel or dive day if you are on the north-east coast.
- A spice farm tour — touristy, genuinely interesting, half a day.
- Check the tide tables for your dates against your chosen beach before confirming. Any decent operator will do this for you if you ask.

Which is the best beach in Zanzibar for a honeymoon?
Kendwa on the northern tip is the best all-round honeymoon choice, because it has minimal tidal variation so you can swim at any hour, calm water, and the island’s best sunsets. Matemwe on the north-east is the pick if you want somewhere quieter and more upmarket with excellent diving at Mnemba Atoll. Michamvi and Pingwe have the most luxurious resorts. Avoid committing to the far south-east coast at Paje or Jambiani unless you are happy with a very large tidal range and wind between June and September.
How much does a Zanzibar honeymoon cost?
Around US$2,500 to US$4,000 per couple for seven nights at a good four-star beach hotel including flights from Europe. A premium week at a boutique or small luxury resort with private transfers runs US$5,000 to US$9,000. Mnemba Island or a staffed private villa starts around US$12,000 and rises steeply. What is the tide problem in Zanzibar?
Zanzibar’s east and south-east coasts have an extreme tidal range. At low tide the water can retreat several hundred metres, leaving seagrass flats rather than swimmable sea for several hours a day. The north coast, particularly Kendwa and Nungwi, is barely affected and is swimmable all day. If uninterrupted sea swimming matters to you, book the north, or choose a resort with a good pool.
When is the best time to visit Zanzibar for a honeymoon?
June to October is the best window: dry, sunny and cooler in the evenings, though the east coast can be windy. January and February are also excellent, hot and dry with the calmest seas and the best diving visibility. Avoid April and May, the long rains, when some properties close.
