Zanzibar does not have one simple wet season. Tanzania Meteorological Authority classifies the islands as having a bimodal rainfall pattern: the long rains (Masika) typically run from March to May, the short rains (Vuli) from October to December, January and February are relatively dry, and June through September are dry months.
For honeymoon planning: choose June–October if weather certainty matters most; January–February if you prefer hotter tropical conditions; and November–early December if you are comfortable with showers in exchange for a potentially quieter feel. Treat April–May as the highest-weather-risk period rather than saying Zanzibar is impossible then.

Zanzibar month by month
January
A strong honeymoon month after the festive rush. Expect warm sea, high temperatures and generally better weather confidence than during the short rains.
February
Still relatively dry and very warm. Excellent if you want a tropical beach honeymoon without the cooler evenings of the June–September period.
March
Early March can work well, but weather risk increases as the month progresses and the long-rains pattern develops.
April
The least weather-reliable month for a beach-led honeymoon. Heavy rain is more likely and some smaller tourism businesses may reduce operations.
May
Still part of the main wet period. Late May can begin improving, but couples booking a once-only honeymoon should accept a higher rain risk.
June
A very strong month: lower rainfall, comfortable evenings and excellent safari-combination logic. The east and south-east coasts can become breezier.
July
One of the most reliable beach-weather months and a major safari season. Book earlier, especially if you want a specific honeymoon resort or villa.
August
Excellent overall, with especially strong demand. Paje and the south-east can feel windier — great for active couples, less ideal if you want still water every afternoon.
September
Dry-season reliability continues, with warm days and a natural fit with Serengeti or Maasai Mara safari itineraries.
October
Still one of the best overall months. Conditions become warmer as the short-rains season approaches, but October often remains an excellent honeymoon choice.
November
Expect more showers and less weather certainty, but not necessarily all-day rain. A good option for couples who value warmth and fewer peak-season pressures.
December
Short-rain variability continues early in the month. Christmas and New Year bring much stronger demand, higher resort pricing and tighter villa availability.
What wind means for your beach choice
Zanzibar’s coastlines do not feel identical in the same month. The east and south-east — especially around Paje and Jambiani — are more exposed to seasonal trade winds, which is part of why the area is popular for kitesurfing. In the dry-season months, couples who want very calm swimming and minimal wind should give extra weight to Kendwa and Nungwi in the north.

Best time for diving and snorkelling
PADI describes Zanzibar as a year-round diving destination, with Indian Ocean water around 27°C and visibility often exceeding 30 metres. It currently highlights September to December as a period when whale-shark encounters can occur around Mnemba Atoll alongside turtles and dolphins. These are wildlife opportunities, not guarantees.
If diving is a major honeymoon priority, choose the coast and dive operator first rather than assuming one island-wide “best diving month.” Matemwe is especially practical for Mnemba-area trips, while Stone Town and other coasts access different sites.
Best time for a safari + Zanzibar honeymoon
June to October is the easiest answer. Zanzibar is in its main dry period, while northern Tanzania and Kenya are also in their core dry-season safari months. That makes it straightforward to combine Serengeti or Maasai Mara wildlife with five to seven nights on the island.
January and February are the other excellent option. Zanzibar is hot and relatively dry, and Tanzania can offer superb early-year safari experiences, including the southern Serengeti / Ndutu calving period depending on your exact dates.

Does the tide change by season?
No season removes Zanzibar’s tidal character. Tides change every day according to the lunar cycle, and the east and north-east coasts can still expose large reef flats at low tide in every month. If all-day swimming matters, beach location matters more than travel month. Kendwa and Nungwi remain the simplest choices.
Best time for honeymoon value
Peak dry-season demand and the Christmas/New Year period can push resort rates up substantially. Shoulder periods such as March, November and early December can create better-value opportunities, but the trade-off is less predictable weather. April and May may look cheap for a reason: they carry the highest rain risk.

If your wedding fixes the month
February wedding: excellent. Zanzibar is hot and relatively dry; this is one of the best alternatives to the June–October season.
April wedding: consider delaying the honeymoon if beach-weather certainty matters. If you cannot, choose a resort you would enjoy even with rain and avoid over-scheduling boat activities.
July wedding: excellent for a Tanzania or Kenya safari + Zanzibar honeymoon. Book early and consider the north if wind-sensitive.
September wedding: one of the easiest months for the whole trip — dry island weather and excellent safari pairing.
November wedding: still viable. Expect short-rain showers rather than assuming the trip is ruined; build in flexible beach and excursion days.
December wedding: early December can be attractive; festive dates become expensive and busy, so secure the resort and room category well in advance.
