Zanzibar Beaches & Honeymoon Areas

Zanzibar is often described as one beach destination, but its coastline changes dramatically from one area to another. Tides, swimming conditions, hotel style and atmosphere vary enough that choosing the right area is one of the most important decisions in a Zanzibar honeymoon.

Nungwi

Nungwi in the north has some of the island’s easiest swimming conditions because tidal changes are less extreme than on much of the east coast. It also has more restaurants, bars and activity. Choose it if you want a lively beach base with plenty around you.

Kendwa

Kendwa is close to Nungwi but generally feels more beach-focused and relaxed. The broad white sand and relatively swimmable water make it one of the strongest Zanzibar beaches for couples who want simple resort days without being isolated.

Matemwe

Matemwe on the north-east coast is quieter, more spacious and a good base for trips toward Mnemba. Tides are more visible here, but the sense of space is excellent. It works well for boutique hotels, reef trips and couples who value calm over nightlife.

East coast: Pongwe, Michamvi and beyond

The east coast is where you find many of Zanzibar’s most romantic resorts. Long beaches, palms and smaller properties create a strong honeymoon feel. Tides can retreat a long way, so swimming directly from the beach is not always possible all day. For many couples, that visual rhythm is part of the charm rather than a problem.

Paje and Jambiani

Paje has become a watersports and social hub, especially for kitesurfing. Jambiani is more village-oriented and relaxed. These areas are good for active couples and those who want local restaurants and movement rather than staying entirely inside a resort.

Which area is best for a honeymoon?

Choose Kendwa for easy beach days, Matemwe for quiet reef access, the east coast for romantic resorts, Paje for activity and social energy, and Nungwi for convenience and nightlife. If you have ten or more nights on Zanzibar, splitting the stay between two areas can work well.

Stone Town: one night before or after the beach

Stone Town, Zanzibar’s historic old town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of winding lanes, carved doors, Omani and Indian influences and rooftop restaurants. It is not a beach base, but one night here — with a private guided walk, a Swahili food tour or sunset drinks on a rooftop — adds real culture to a honeymoon. It works best on arrival or before departure because it is close to the airport.

Getting to the beaches

Flights land at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, just outside Stone Town, with international connections and short domestic flights from Tanzanian safari airstrips, Dar es Salaam and Arusha. Road transfers to the main beach areas take roughly an hour to an hour and a half, depending on the coast. Zanzibar requires foreign visitors to hold its mandatory inbound travel insurance, alongside Tanzanian entry requirements, so check current rules before you travel.

How to split a Zanzibar stay

• 5–6 nights: one area only — Kendwa for swimming, or an east-coast resort for romance.
• 7–8 nights: 1 night Stone Town + 6–7 nights on one coast.
• 10+ nights: 1 night Stone Town + 4–5 nights in the north + 4–5 nights on the east coast.

Where are the best white sand beaches?

Kendwa, Nungwi and many east-coast stretches all deliver the white sand beach image people associate with Zanzibar. The important distinction is not sand colour but water access. Ask about tides and swimming at the exact hotel before booking.
