Zanzibar Honeymoon Cost

Realistic 7-, 10- and 14-night budgets — including resorts, meals, transfers, taxes, mandatory insurance and the upgrades that push the price higher.
Cost guide for couples
The short answer
Zanzibar can be genuinely good value, but the cheapest hotel is not necessarily the cheapest honeymoon. Coast choice changes how much you spend on transfers, taxis, outside restaurants and activities; meal plan changes how predictable the final bill is; and luxury resorts can cost several times more than strong boutique hotels only a few kilometres away.
Pricing basis: All ranges below are indicative 2026 planning estimates per couple. Stand-alone Zanzibar figures include accommodation, normal airport transfers and a reasonable activity allowance but exclude intercontinental flights. Exact resort taxes, meal inclusions and seasonal supplements vary by property, so compare the final payable total rather than only the room rate.
7, 10 and 14-night Zanzibar honeymoon budgets

7 nights
One strong beach resort, private airport transfers and a few experiences. Luxury all-inclusive or private-pool stays can exceed this range substantially.

10 nights
Enough for Stone Town plus one beach, or two carefully chosen beach areas, without turning the honeymoon into constant hotel changes.

14 nights
A slow island honeymoon with two or three chapters, better room categories and enough time for diving, dhow sailing and relaxed resort days.
Budget by travel style
| Travel style | Typical 7-night total | What that usually means |
|---|---|---|
| Value-conscious | US$1,800–3,000 | Good boutique or four-star stay, breakfast/half-board, shared or simple transfers and selective activities. |
| Comfortable | US$2,500–5,000 | Strong beach hotel, better room category, private transfers, a dhow or snorkelling day and some meals included. |
| Premium | US$5,000–10,000 | Five-star resort, stronger suite/villa category, all-inclusive or half-board and more private experiences. |
| Exceptional | US$12,000–25,000+ | Private-island style stays, top villas, staffed accommodation, private boat days and little compromise on room category. |
Where the money goes
1. Accommodation
This is the biggest variable. Zanzibar has excellent mid-range hotels, but the top end rises sharply. Zuri Zanzibar’s published 2026 rack rates list its entry bungalow on half board at US$790 per room per night in mid season, US$1,160 in high season and US$1,340 over the festive period. Seven high-season nights at that entry level are already more than US$8,000 before flights or upgrades.
2. Meal plan
Breakfast-only or half-board makes sense around places such as Nungwi and Paje when you want to eat outside the resort. All-inclusive becomes more attractive at isolated east- or south-coast properties where most meals and drinks would otherwise be bought at hotel prices. At Zuri, the published 2026 supplement from half-board to all-inclusive is US$140 per person per night, which shows why meal plan alone can add nearly US$2,000 to a seven-night stay for two.
3. Mandatory inbound insurance
Zanzibar Insurance Corporation currently lists the mandatory inbound policy at US$44 per adult, even if you already hold another travel or medical policy. For two adults, budget US$88. Treat this as an entry-related cost rather than assuming your resort package includes it.
4. Infrastructure tax
The Zanzibar Revenue Authority currently lists the infrastructure tax for guests at US$5 per person per day at 4- and 5-star hotels. That means roughly US$70 per couple for seven nights, US$100 for ten nights and US$140 for fourteen nights at those properties. Lower hotel categories are charged at lower rates.
5. Transfers and getting around
Airport-to-resort transfers are not expensive relative to the hotel, but Zanzibar is larger than it looks. Moving from Stone Town to Kendwa, then to Paje, then back to the airport can add several private transfers and waste half-days. This is why a two-coast itinerary only makes financial and practical sense when you have enough nights.
6. Experiences
What does your budget actually buy?
| Total budget for two | What a realistic Zanzibar honeymoon can look like |
|---|---|
| About US$3,000 | Seven nights at a good boutique or four-star property, simple transfers, half-board or breakfast and one or two paid experiences. |
| About US$6,000 | Seven to ten nights with a stronger resort, better room, private transfers, Stone Town and several activities — or an entry-level five-star stay in a favourable season. |
| About US$10,000 | High-end resort or private-pool room, better meal plan, more private experiences and enough budget to choose the coast for fit rather than price alone. |
| About US$15,000 | Either a very luxurious standalone Zanzibar honeymoon or a compact safari + Zanzibar combination with sensible safari lodging. |
| US$20,000+ | Top villas, premium all-inclusive resorts, private experiences or a premium safari-and-beach itinerary. |
How much does safari + Zanzibar cost?
The beach half is normally cheaper per night than safari, so Zanzibar is a useful place to extend the honeymoon without increasing the average daily spend as dramatically. A well-planned Tanzania + Zanzibar honeymoon commonly sits around US$9,000–15,000 per couple before intercontinental flights, while a Kenya + Zanzibar honeymoon can sit around US$8,500–14,000 depending on safari camp level, season and flights.
If your budget is fixed, adding two extra beach nights usually costs far less than adding two extra premium safari nights.
Where couples overspend
- Paying for the wrong coast: a five-star hotel is poor value if the tides or atmosphere frustrate how you want to use the beach.
- Buying all-inclusive in Nungwi or Paje without using it: outside restaurants can make half-board more flexible.
- Too many hotel changes: every move adds a transfer and loses part of a day.
- Festive dates: Christmas and New Year room rates can jump materially and minimum stays may apply.
- Ignoring local fees: insurance and infrastructure tax are small next to a luxury hotel, but they should still be in the trip total.
How to save without making the honeymoon worse
- Choose the right beach area before choosing the hotel brand.
- Stay in one excellent beach resort for seven nights rather than two mediocre ones.
- Use half-board where independent restaurants are genuinely accessible; use all-inclusive where the resort is isolated.
- Travel outside festive dates and compare June–October demand with January–February and shoulder periods using our best-time guide.
- Spend on one room upgrade that matters — private pool, oceanfront or better privacy — rather than stacking several paid activities.
- Check whether honeymoon benefits already include dinner, spa discounts or welcome extras before buying them separately.

How much does a Zanzibar honeymoon cost for two?
For a beach-only honeymoon excluding intercontinental flights, a realistic planning range is roughly US$2,200–5,000 per couple for seven nights, US$3,000–7,000 for ten nights and US$4,500–10,000 for fourteen nights. Premium villas and flagship resorts can cost much more.
Is Zanzibar expensive for a honeymoon?
Zanzibar offers unusually broad value. Good boutique and four-star hotels can be affordable, while the top resorts are genuinely expensive. The biggest cost decision is hotel level and room category rather than food or local transport.
What extra taxes and fees should couples budget for?
Foreign visitors currently need Zanzibar’s mandatory inbound insurance, listed at US$44 per adult. Zanzibar also levies an infrastructure tax on hotel guests; the current rate for 4- and 5-star hotels is US$5 per person per day.
Is all-inclusive worth it in Zanzibar?
It is most useful at isolated resorts where you expect to eat and drink almost entirely on property. Around Nungwi and Paje, half-board can be better value if trying local restaurants is part of the honeymoon.
Can we do safari and Zanzibar for under US$10,000?
Yes with a compact safari, sensible camp choices and a strong mid-range beach hotel, particularly outside peak dates. Premium safari camps or five-star Zanzibar resorts can push the trip above that quickly.
