12 nights · Maasai Mara + Zanzibar
Kenya & Zanzibar honeymoon package: big cats, Stone Town and beach
A classic East African safari in Kenya followed by a cultural and beach finish on Zanzibar.
A well-paced 12-night route: one Nairobi night, four nights in the Maasai Mara, one night in Stone Town and six nights on Zanzibar’s coast.
Why choose Kenya and Zanzibar?
This combination works for couples who want Kenya’s private conservancies and Mara wildlife but prefer Zanzibar’s Swahili culture and island atmosphere to the Kenyan coast. It also gives the beach half more variety: Stone Town, dhow sailing and different coastal areas before the final resort stay.
Use our Maasai Mara honeymoon guide for the safari side and the Zanzibar beaches and areas guide to choose the right coast.
Suggested 12-night itinerary
Night 1
Nairobi
Arrive and rest before the bush flight.
Nights 2–5
Maasai Mara
Four nights in one camp or conservancy. Add a private game drive, bush breakfast or balloon flight if those experiences matter to you.
Night 6
Stone Town
Stay inside or near the historic centre and take a private Stone Town tour rather than rushing straight through the airport to a beach hotel.
Nights 7–12
Zanzibar coast
Choose Kendwa or Nungwi for easier swimming and more activity, or Matemwe and the east coast for a quieter feel. Add a sunset dhow sail and otherwise protect the final days from over-scheduling.
What should you budget?
For a premium version with a strong Mara camp and a good Zanzibar beach hotel, use roughly US$11,000–15,000 per couple including long-haul flights from Europe as a planning range. Migration-season safari rates, private vehicles and top beach villas are the biggest variables.
Best time to combine Kenya and Zanzibar
July to October is a popular overlap for dry safari conditions and generally good Zanzibar beach weather. January and February can also work very well and may feel less pressured in the Mara. April and May are usually the weakest period because longer rains affect both sides of the trip.
Questions couples ask
Kenya and Zanzibar or Tanzania and Zanzibar?
Kenya is especially attractive if you want private Mara conservancies and a shorter, concentrated safari. Tanzania gives you the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the simplicity of staying within one country before flying to Zanzibar.
Is Stone Town worth one night?
Yes for most couples. It adds culture and food before the beach and prevents the Zanzibar half from feeling like only a resort stay.
How many beach nights are enough?
Five to six nights is ideal after safari. Four works if the overall trip is short, but the beach should still feel like a real second half rather than an add-on.
