Zanzibar vs Seychelles for a honeymoon
Last updated 7 October 2026 · By the honeymoons.africa editorial team
Zanzibar is stronger for Swahili culture, value and a seamless Tanzania or Kenya safari finish. Seychelles is stronger for iconic beach scenery, privacy, island-hopping and a more distinctive high-end island honeymoon.
The short answer
Which is better for your honeymoon?
Choose Zanzibar if you want the beach chapter to stay connected to East Africa. Stone Town, dhow culture and an easy transfer after Tanzania or Kenya safari create a varied trip at a much lower budget. Choose Seychelles if the island scenery itself is one of the main reasons for travelling. Mahé, Praslin and La Digue reward couples who want privacy, multiple island chapters and beaches that feel visually unlike almost anywhere else.
Before choosing on budget alone, compare Zanzibar honeymoon resorts with Seychelles honeymoon resorts; include meals and island transfers in the comparison.
For value, culture and safari + beach
- You are finishing a Tanzania or Kenya safari and want the cleanest regional beach extension.
- You want Stone Town, Swahili atmosphere and local restaurants as part of the trip.
- You want strong boutique and luxury hotels without Seychelles-level total spend.
- You have 5–9 beach nights and do not want internal flights or ferries between islands.
For beaches, privacy and island-hopping
- You picture granite coves, bicycles on La Digue and a honeymoon that changes island every few nights.
- You value scenery and privacy more than culture, nightlife or a large restaurant scene.
- You have around 9–12 nights and enough budget to make two or three islands worthwhile.
- You want the beach half to feel as important as the safari or other first half of the honeymoon.
Overall verdict: Zanzibar is the smarter all-round choice for safari + beach, cultural variety and value. Seychelles is the stronger pure island honeymoon when beach scenery, privacy and a sense of escape justify the higher price. If you only have seven nights, Zanzibar is easier. If you have ten nights or more and the islands are the main event, Seychelles becomes much harder to beat.
At a glance
Zanzibar vs Seychelles: who wins what?
Granite coves and small-island backdrops are genuinely distinctive.
Much lower entry and mid-range budgets with strong boutique options.
Stone Town, dhow heritage and Swahili identity add another layer.
Mahé, Praslin and La Digue can each be a full honeymoon chapter.
One of Africa’s cleanest safari-and-beach combinations.
Private-pool villas and smaller islands create a stronger hideaway feel.
One coast plus Stone Town works without sacrificing much time to transfers.
The best resorts are inseparable from dramatic island settings.
The visual question
Which has better honeymoon beaches?
Seychelles wins for iconic beach scenery. Zanzibar still has superb white sand and turquoise water, but the coast and tides matter more to how the beach actually works day to day. Seychelles gives you more individual beaches that feel like destinations in their own right; Zanzibar gives you stronger value and a broader cultural setting around the beach.

Beautiful, but choose the coast carefully
Kendwa and parts of Nungwi are the easiest choices for swimming and sunsets. The east and south-east can expose large reef flats at low tide, which is atmospheric but less convenient if you want deep water at any hour.
- Kendwa: strongest first choice for swimming and sunsets.
- Paje: best for cafés, kite-surfing and more life outside the resort.
- Matemwe/Dongwe/Pongwe: quieter, more resort-led and stronger for seclusion.

More iconic, more cove-led, more island-specific
Praslin and La Digue deliver the granite-boulder landscapes most couples picture, while Mahé has dozens of coves with very different exposure. The strongest honeymoon moves between islands rather than relying on one hotel beach.
- Best for beach-hopping and photography.
- Strongest when Praslin or La Digue is a real stay, not only a day trip.
- Wind, swell and seasonal seaweed still make beach orientation important.
Is Seychelles automatically better for swimming?
How the trip feels
Culture, romance, resort style and things to do
More cultural texture around the beach
Zanzibar works best when at least one day feels different from a resort day: Stone Town, a private walking tour, a dhow sail, local food or a village/coast excursion. The honeymoon can therefore feel distinctly East African rather than simply tropical.
- Stone Town creates an easy one-night cultural chapter.
- Boutique hotels, villas and all-inclusive resorts cover a wide budget range.
- Five to seven beach nights are enough after safari.
More island-led privacy and visual drama
Seychelles is less about cultural sightseeing and more about how each island feels. A private-pool villa on Mahé, famous beaches on Praslin and bicycles on La Digue make the change of place itself the itinerary.
- Private-pool villas and secluded island resorts are a major strength.
- Hiking, snorkelling, boat days and beach-hopping replace a strong urban/cultural layer.
- The best trip normally needs more nights and more internal logistics.

2026 planning ranges
Which honeymoon is cheaper?
Zanzibar is substantially cheaper for most couples. Seychelles’ higher accommodation costs are only part of the difference: a multi-island itinerary also adds ferries, domestic flights and transfers. These are indicative destination-portion totals per couple and exclude intercontinental long-haul flights.
| Trip length | Zanzibar | Seychelles | Planning read |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 nights | US$2,200–5,000 | US$4,500–8,000 | Zanzibar is the clear value choice; Seychelles is best kept to one or two islands. |
| 10 nights | US$3,000–7,000 | US$6,500–11,500 | Ten nights is where Seychelles can justify two or three island chapters. |
| 14 nights | US$4,500–10,000 | US$9,000–16,000 | Both can be slow and luxurious, but Seychelles remains much more expensive. |

Weather changes the answer
Zanzibar vs Seychelles by honeymoon month
The destinations have different sweet spots. Zanzibar is strongest in June–October and again in January–February. Seychelles is strongest in the calmer transition months of April–May and October–November.
Zanzibar is hot and relatively dry. Seychelles is also warm but wetter and more humid, so Zanzibar offers better weather confidence.
Zanzibar moves into its long rains, with April particularly risky. Seychelles becomes calmer and April is one of its strongest months.
Seychelles is excellent in May before stronger trades dominate. Zanzibar improves sharply into June as the main dry season begins.
Zanzibar is dry and pairs perfectly with peak safari season. Seychelles is cooler and drier too, but stronger southeast trades can roughen exposed seas.
Zanzibar remains reliably dry through much of the period. Seychelles moves into one of its calmest and best island-hopping windows, especially October.
November is an excellent Seychelles transition month, while Zanzibar has more short-rain variability. By December both become wetter and festive pricing rises.

Two trip shapes that work
Best honeymoon routes

Stone Town + one excellent beach
- Stone Town · 1 night: private walking tour, dinner and a cultural reset after the flight or safari.
- Kendwa/Nungwi · 6–8 nights: easy swimming, sunsets and enough time to genuinely decompress.
- Add selectively: one dhow or snorkelling day rather than turning the beach half into another checklist.

The three-island honeymoon
- Mahé · 2–3 nights: arrive, settle in and start with one polished resort chapter.
- Praslin · 4 nights: Anse Lazio, Anse Georgette and Curieuse.
- La Digue · 3 nights: bicycles, slower scale and the classic granite-beach finale.

The contrast is useful: Zanzibar gives you strong luxury at several price levels and easy all-inclusive options; Seychelles leans harder into private pools, iconic island settings and higher-end seclusion.
