When to go
The short answer
Visit Rwanda describes two rainy seasons: mid-February to May and mid-September to mid-December. Temperatures change less dramatically than rainfall because much of the country sits at altitude. The practical question is therefore not “Will it be hot?” but “How much mud and rain are you willing to accept on the trek?”
Honeymoon timing rule: if the gorilla trek is the emotional centre of the trip, optimise first for the trekking window. If Rwanda is only four nights before Mauritius, Seychelles or Zanzibar, optimise the whole combination rather than Rwanda in isolation.

Rwanda month by month
January
One of the better early-year months. Trails are often easier than in the long rains and it pairs well with an Indian Ocean beach finish, though Mauritius is warm and humid at this time.
February
The first half can still be attractive for trekking; rainfall generally increases as the long rainy season approaches.
March
Expect greener scenery and muddier trekking. Choose March for lower demand and flexibility, not because you want the easiest mountain conditions.
April
A beautiful but challenging time for the forest. Waterproofs, gaiters and a porter become even more useful. Good for travellers comfortable trading convenience for fewer crowds.
May
Still part of the wetter period, but conditions begin transitioning toward the main dry season. Late May can be an interesting shoulder option.
June
The main dry season begins. Trails and roads are easier, making June one of the strongest months for a gorilla-led honeymoon.
July
Excellent for Volcanoes National Park and a strong month for a Rwanda + Seychelles or Rwanda + Mauritius combination. Book permits and lodges early.
August
Very strong conditions and high demand. The mountains remain cool relative to lowland Africa, so pack layers even when the rest of the honeymoon is beach-led.
September
Early September is one of the strongest all-round periods. Rainfall typically increases from mid-month, but this is still an excellent wedding-season option.
October
Greener, wetter and muddier. Still very workable for gorillas; just do not schedule the rest of the day as if the trek will be effortless.
November
A rainier month with lush landscapes and lower pressure. Good for couples who care more about atmosphere and value than dry boots.
December
Conditions generally improve as the shorter dry period develops. Late December can be excellent but carries festive pricing and high holiday demand.
Does rain stop gorilla trekking?
No. Gorilla trekking operates year-round. Rain changes the difficulty and comfort of the hike more than the basic viability of the experience. The animals live in rainforest; even the dry season can bring showers. Proper footwear, a waterproof layer, gloves and a porter are sensible in every month.
Best time for Lake Kivu
Lake Kivu works year-round as a slow-down chapter, but the dry periods are easier for outdoor plans and road journeys. If Rwanda is paired with a beach destination, Lake Kivu is optional rather than essential; do not add it just because the weather is good if it makes the overall itinerary too busy.
Best time for Nyungwe and Akagera
Nyungwe: forest experiences are possible year-round, but wet weather can make trails more demanding. Akagera: the drier middle of the year generally gives easier classic safari conditions, while greener months bring a different landscape and more variable wildlife dispersion.
Best time for Rwanda + Mauritius, Seychelles or Zanzibar
Rwanda + Mauritius: June to October is the easiest overall overlap. Mauritius is cooler in mid-year and the east can be breezy, so Le Morne, the west or north-west can be stronger if calm beach conditions matter.
Rwanda + Seychelles: June to September is a particularly clean combination for couples wanting the gorilla trek first and island time second.
Rwanda + Zanzibar: June to October is also strong, especially when the safari/primate half should have the most predictable trekking conditions.
