What a gorilla trekking day is like
- Early start: briefing at the park headquarters around dawn, where rangers assign visitors to a gorilla family.
- The trek: anything from under an hour to several hours each way, depending on where the family moved overnight. Porters can carry your bag and help on steep sections.
- The hour: once you reach the gorillas, you spend up to one hour with them in a small group, keeping a respectful distance.
- Return: back to your lodge for a late lunch, a massage and a quiet evening.
Best time for gorilla trekking
Trekking runs year-round. The drier months of June to September and December to February make trails less muddy and are the most popular. The wetter months can be excellent for photography and lower lodge rates, but expect slippery paths. Permits for peak months often sell out six months or more in advance. Fitness and rules
You need reasonable fitness for steep, muddy hiking at altitude. Visitors must be at least 15 years old, should not trek if unwell (gorillas are vulnerable to human illnesses), and must follow ranger instructions on distance, masks where required and photography without flash.
How to fit gorilla trekking into a honeymoon
Most couples spend two or three nights near the park: one trek, a rest day and perhaps a second activity such as golden monkey tracking or a hike. Pair the forest with a calmer second half:

Is gorilla trekking better in Rwanda or Uganda for a honeymoon?
