Rwanda works unusually well in a two-destination honeymoon because the headline wildlife experience is concentrated. You do not need a seven-night safari circuit to reach the emotional high point: a well-planned three-night Volcanoes stay can contain the gorilla trek, recovery time and an optional second activity. Mauritius then does what it does best—one comfortable base, strong resort infrastructure and very little pressure to keep moving.
The key planning issue is not the route length; it is the permit and flight sequence. Confirm the gorilla trek first, then fit the Kigali–Mauritius journey around it.

An 11-night honeymoon with a deliberate change of pace
Keep Rwanda compact, but never so compact that a delayed arrival puts the gorilla trek at risk.
Use the first night as insurance
Do not land and immediately race to Volcanoes National Park unless the flight schedule forces it. A Kigali night gives you a recovery buffer, protects the permit day and makes the start of the honeymoon calmer.
Good sequencing: arrive, sleep, then drive roughly 2.5 hours to the Volcanoes area the next day. Place the gorilla trek after a proper night near the park.
Build the Rwanda stay around one extraordinary morning
International gorilla permits currently cost US$1,500 per person per trek. One trek is enough for most couples; a second makes sense when gorillas are the central reason for the trip and the budget comfortably allows it.
Use the other day for golden monkeys, the Dian Fossey area, spa time or simply a slow lodge afternoon. The trek can be physically demanding, so resist the urge to fill every hour.
Honeymoon priority: book the permit before locking non-refundable flights. The permit date is the fixed point; the rest of the route should flex around it.
Then stop moving
Seven nights is long enough to enjoy the resort rather than merely recover from Rwanda. Choose the coast for the month, upgrade the room category if it matters to you and leave several days unplanned.

For 11 nights, a sensible planning range is roughly US$12,000–20,000+ per couple including long-haul flights from Europe. The gorilla permits create a fixed floor: one trek each currently adds US$3,000 per couple before the lodge, driver and other Rwanda costs. Mauritius is more flexible because the resort and room category can move the total dramatically.

June to October is the easiest overall overlap
Rwanda trekking and Mauritius beach conditions do not peak in exactly the same way, so coast choice matters.
Practical planning
Design the trip around the permit and the regional flight
1. Confirm the gorilla permit first
Visit Rwanda currently lists international gorilla permits at US$1,500 per person per day. The permit date is the least flexible part of this honeymoon, so secure it before committing to an inflexible flight sequence.
2. Do not put the trek straight after an international arrival
A Kigali buffer night protects the most expensive fixed activity in the trip. It also makes the roughly 2.5-hour road journey to the Volcanoes area much more civilised.
3. Kigali to Mauritius currently requires a stop
As of September 2026 there are no scheduled nonstop KGL–MRU flights. One-stop options commonly route via Nairobi, Johannesburg, Addis Ababa or Dubai. Check the exact weekday before locking the Rwanda lodge checkout and Mauritius resort check-in.
4. Seven Mauritius nights do not need two hotels
After an active mountain chapter, a one-resort week is often the better honeymoon. Split the island only if two coasts genuinely add something you value.
5. Pack for two climates
Rwanda needs proper trekking footwear, rain protection and clothes you are happy to get muddy. Mauritius needs an entirely different wardrobe. Keep trekking gear separated so a wet morning does not affect the beach luggage.

Which Mauritius coast is best after Rwanda?

Is Rwanda + Mauritius better than Rwanda + Seychelles?
Mauritius is stronger for an easy one-resort finish, broad hotel choice and lagoon-led downtime. Seychelles is stronger if iconic granite beaches, island character and island-hopping matter more.
Can we add Lake Kivu?
Yes, but extend the trip. With 13–14 nights, adding two or three Lake Kivu nights makes sense. Inside 11 nights it would take too much time away from Mauritius.
