Honeymoon in Mauritius

If your idea of a honeymoon is arriving somewhere and never having to make another decision, Mauritius is the best destination in Africa. A coral reef rings almost the whole island, so most beaches face a calm, shallow lagoon without the big tidal swings of Zanzibar; the exception is part of the wild south coast, where there is no reef. The resorts are genuinely excellent, service is a national point of pride, and half-board and all-inclusive plans are easy to find.

The honest trade-off: Mauritius is the least adventurous option on this site. The beaches are lovely rather than jaw-dropping, and the resort-centred rhythm means you can easily spend ten nights without meaningfully seeing the country. That is exactly what some couples want after a wedding, and a disappointment to others. Know which you are.

Which coast?

Mauritius is small, under two hours’ drive end to end, but the coasts differ, mostly because of the south-east trade winds. They blow hardest from May to October, peaking in July and August, and hit the east and south coasts head-on while the west and north stay sheltered.

The simple rule: from May to October stay on the west or north coast; from November to April every coast works and the east is at its best. Le Morne in the south-west is the most photogenic corner of the island. For transfer times and the resorts on each coast, see which coast suits your month.

Best time to go

Mauritius is in the southern hemisphere, so its seasons are inverted from Europe.

September to November, and April to May, are the strongest all-round windows for most honeymooners. January to March is still usable, but it is hotter, wetter and carries more cyclone-disruption risk. Direct hits are rare (none of the nine named storms of 2025–26 made landfall), but a day or two of rain or a closed airport is possible, so book flexible rates. What it costs

The hotel is most of the bill. These are seven-night totals for two at resorts we priced on Expedia for 1–8 February 2027, including taxes and fees, before flights and the tourist fee.

Add the tourist fee of €3 per person per night for everyone aged 12 or over (€42 for a week for two), which the hotel collects at check-in and Expedia prices do not include. All-inclusive genuinely makes sense in Mauritius, which is unusual. Resorts are often some distance from independent restaurants, and drinks add up quickly at resort prices. The exception is the north around Grand Baie, where there are enough good restaurants outside the hotels that half board can be the better choice.

Getting beyond the sunlounger

Worth doing at least two of these, or you will not have seen Mauritius at all:

• Île aux Cerfs — the classic day trip off the east coast, best early before the crowds.
• Chamarel — the seven-coloured earths, a waterfall, and rum distilleries worth an afternoon.
• Black River Gorges National Park — genuine rainforest hiking, and a reminder that the island has an interior.
• Le Morne Brabant — a UNESCO site with a hard but rewarding hike, and enormous historical weight as a refuge for escaped slaves.
• Port Louis market — the food is a genuine highlight of the island. Mauritian cuisine blends Indian, Creole, Chinese and French, and the street food is excellent.
• Dolphin swimming at Tamarin — go with an operator that keeps its distance and limits numbers; some are much better than others on this.

Practical details

Getting there

Direct flights from Paris, London and several European cities, plus connections via Dubai, Doha, Istanbul and Johannesburg. Flight time is around twelve hours from London. The airport is in the south-east, so transfers take 45–65 minutes to the east and south coasts, 55–75 minutes to the west and 70–80 minutes to Grand Baie in the north (transfer times by resort).

Entry

UK and US visitors need no visa for stays of up to 60 days, and EU citizens can stay up to three months in any six-month period. Your passport must be valid for the whole stay, and you need proof of onward or return travel. You also need to complete the free All-in-One Travel Form online at safemauritius.govmu.org within 72 hours before arrival: the UK and US governments list it as a requirement, and you can ignore third-party sites that charge for it. Mauritius has announced an e-visa and travel-authorisation system but has not set a start date, so check again before you fly. Other nationalities should check with the Mauritius Passport and Immigration Office.

Health

No malaria and no yellow fever risk. No special vaccinations are needed for most travellers, but if you arrive from a country Mauritius considers a yellow-fever risk, which includes some safari countries, you need a yellow fever vaccination certificate, so check the list before you fly. Tap water is generally treated, but most visitors drink bottled.

Combining with safari

Worth asking for

• Say you are on honeymoon, and bring your marriage certificate. Most honeymoon offers need one no more than 12 months old. • Marrying in Mauritius? Two foreign visitors can have a civil wedding there. Wedding planners ask for the documents at least eight weeks ahead, including birth certificates less than three months old, translated into English or French.
• Check whether the resort’s beach is swimmable at all tides — most are, thanks to the lagoon, but a few south-coast properties are not.
• Half board in the north, all-inclusive elsewhere is usually the right call.
• Book a sea-view room, not garden view. It is the one upgrade in Mauritius that is consistently worth the money.
