Night 1
Kigali
Arrive, rest and keep the first evening simple before travelling to the mountains.
Nights 2–4
Volcanoes National Park
Base yourself near the park for one gorilla trek with enough time around it that the experience does not feel like a rushed day trip. Couples who want a more active route can add golden monkeys or another guided hike.
Nights 5–10
Zanzibar
Fly to the island and stay on one coast. Six nights gives you a proper recovery period plus room for a Stone Town visit, dhow sail or snorkelling day.
What should you budget?
Gorilla permits and premium lodges make the Rwanda portion expensive relative to its number of nights. Use roughly US$12,000–16,000 per couple including long-haul flights from Europe as a planning range for a comfortable-to-premium trip, with luxury mountain lodges capable of pushing the total substantially higher.
Best time to combine Rwanda and Zanzibar
June to September and December to February are generally the easiest windows for trekking conditions and a Zanzibar beach extension. Even in drier periods, Volcanoes National Park is a rainforest environment, so rain and muddy trails remain possible. The route works best when you accept the mountain section as an active experience and keep the beach section deliberately easy.
Questions couples ask
Is one gorilla trek enough?
For most honeymooners, yes. A second trek gives another chance with a different gorilla family but adds considerable cost. One well-paced trek plus several Zanzibar nights often creates the better overall balance.
Rwanda or Uganda for gorillas?
Rwanda is generally easier to combine into a short premium itinerary because the transfer from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park is relatively straightforward. Uganda can suit couples who want a longer, more varied wildlife circuit.
Should we visit Stone Town?
Yes if you have six Zanzibar nights. One night or a well-planned private visit adds culture without taking too much time from the beach.
