The short answer
Rwanda is not expensive in the same way as Botswana, where many safari nights are intrinsically high-cost. Instead, the total is shaped by one very expensive fixed wildlife experience plus an enormous lodge range around Volcanoes National Park. That is why two Rwanda honeymoon quotes with the same number of nights can be thousands of dollars apart.

5 nights
Kigali + three Volcanoes nights + one final buffer night. Best for a gorilla-first trip without trying to cover the whole country.
7 nights
Add two or three Lake Kivu nights so the honeymoon has a slower second chapter after the trek.
10 nights
Enough for Volcanoes plus Lake Kivu and either Nyungwe or Akagera, with room to use better lodges without rushing.
What costs the most?
1. Gorilla permits
Visit Rwanda currently lists the international gorilla permit at US$1,500 per person per day. For a couple, one trek each therefore costs US$3,000. Two treks each doubles that fixed component to US$6,000 before any accommodation is added.
2. The Volcanoes lodge
This is the biggest flexible decision. A flagship forest lodge can cost several times more than a comfortable boutique base only a short drive away. For many couples, the best value is to spend enough for warmth, service and a pleasant recovery afternoon rather than automatically choosing the most expensive room near the park.
3. Private transport and guide
Rwanda is compact, but most premium honeymoon itineraries use a private driver-guide rather than public transport. That improves timing and removes stress, especially between Kigali, Volcanoes and Lake Kivu.
4. Adding Nyungwe or Akagera
Each extra region means more nights, park activities and transport. If the honeymoon is continuing into Kenya, Tanzania or an Indian Ocean island, it is often better to keep Rwanda to four or five nights than force a full-country circuit.

How to save without weakening the honeymoon
- Do one gorilla trek rather than two unless gorillas are the central reason for travelling.
- Use a strong mid-tier Volcanoes lodge and spend the difference on the beach extension or a better room there.
- Keep Rwanda compact if you are combining it with another country.
- Use three nights near Volcanoes rather than four if you only plan one trek.
- Do not add Akagera purely to say you did a safari if the trip already continues to Kenya or Tanzania.
Rwanda-only vs Rwanda + beach
A Rwanda-only honeymoon works best when you genuinely want primates, mountain scenery and a deeper country trip. If you want the trip to become progressively slower, the strongest combinations are Rwanda + Mauritius, Rwanda + Seychelles and Rwanda + Zanzibar. The regional flight adds cost, but it also creates a clearer honeymoon rhythm.

Is a flagship gorilla lodge worth it?
It can be when the lodge itself is meant to be one of the honeymoon’s major experiences. If the beach or second destination matters more, a strong mid-tier Volcanoes lodge often creates a better-balanced total trip.
