Swahili coast and safari, or temples, rice terraces and jungle villas? Comparing two exotic, great-value honeymoon islands.
Exotic island honeymoon comparison
Zanzibar or Bali for a honeymoon?
Zanzibar and Bali both promise an exotic honeymoon at a lower price than the Maldives or the Seychelles. Both have warm water, romantic hotels and a strong local culture. But the experiences are very different. Bali is a busy, highly developed island whose magic lies inland — in Ubud’s jungle, temples and ceremonies. Zanzibar is quieter and more beach-focused, with a historic Swahili old town, spice farms and a unique advantage: some of Africa’s greatest safari parks are a short flight away.

Choose Zanzibar if…
- You want a safari and beach honeymoon
- White sand and calm, quiet beaches matter most
- You prefer a relaxed island with fewer crowds
- You are flying from Europe, the Middle East or Africa
Choose Bali if…
- Culture, food and wellness are as important as the beach
- You want a luxury pool villa at a great price
- You enjoy busy restaurants, beach clubs and nightlife
- You are flying from Asia or Australia
Beaches
On beaches alone, Zanzibar usually wins. Its sand is fine and white, and the water is the classic Indian Ocean turquoise. Choose your area carefully: on the east coast at Paje, Jambiani and Matemwe the tide goes out a long way, revealing sandbanks and seaweed farms, while in the north at Nungwi and Kendwa you can swim at almost any tide and watch the sunset over the sea. See our guide to Zanzibar’s beaches and areas.
Bali’s beaches are more varied than beautiful: surf beaches in Canggu and Seminyak, dramatic clifftop coves around Uluwatu and calmer resort beaches in Nusa Dua. Many couples come to Bali for the whole island experience rather than the sand.
Culture and experiences
Bali’s culture is visible everywhere, from temple offerings to evening dance performances, and its rice-terrace landscapes are recognised by UNESCO. Ubud is one of the world’s great wellness and food destinations. Zanzibar’s highlights are the winding streets of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, spice tours, Swahili food, snorkelling at Mnemba and a sunset dhow sail. The biggest difference is safari: from Zanzibar you can fly to the Serengeti or Nyerere National Park in a couple of hours.
Which is cheaper?
Both offer excellent value. Bali is exceptionally good for private pool villas and eating out, and it is hard to beat for luxury per dollar. Zanzibar’s beach hotels are also well priced, but the total honeymoon cost rises if you add a safari, which is where most of the budget goes. Flights matter too: Zanzibar is closer to Europe, while Bali is closer to Australia and Asia. For budgets, see our Zanzibar honeymoon cost guide and Zanzibar honeymoon packages.
Best time to go
Zanzibar is best in the dry seasons of June to October and December to February; the long rains of roughly April and May bring humidity and some hotel closures. See the best time for a Zanzibar honeymoon. Bali is best in its dry season, roughly April to October, with the wet season from about November to March. That makes June to October a good window for both — and the best time of year for an East African safari.
Practical differences
- Getting there: Zanzibar has connections from Europe, the Gulf and Africa; Bali is a long-haul trip from Europe, usually via Asia or the Middle East.
- Entry: both require checking visa rules before travel, and Bali charges a tourist levy for international visitors.
- Health: ask a travel-health professional about vaccinations and mosquito protection for both; malaria advice differs between Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania, and dengue occurs in both regions.
- Getting around: distances on Zanzibar are short; Bali’s traffic can turn short journeys into long ones.
Our verdict
If you want culture, food and a sociable island, Bali is fantastic. If you want a beach honeymoon with the wow factor of a safari, Zanzibar is the clear winner — start with Tanzania and Zanzibar, Kenya and Zanzibar or Rwanda and Zanzibar.
