Most Romantic Getaways in South Africa (2027)
Published 14 October 2026 · By the honeymoons.africa editorial team
Fifteen places for a honeymoon, anniversary or weekend for two — from Atlantic sunsets and vineyard valleys to treehouse suites, malaria-free safari and a barefoot beach lodge.
Romantic getaways for couples
The short answer
South Africa does romance unusually well because it has so many different settings within a short drive or flight of each other: an ocean city, wine valleys, whale coast, mountain wilderness, forest and lagoon, Big Five reserves and a warm Indian Ocean shore. That makes it equally good for a full honeymoon in South Africa, an anniversary trip or a two-night escape.
We chose the fifteen getaways below for what makes them special for a couple, then matched each with one or two places to stay where the room, setting and food are part of the experience. Safari lodges and Winelands estates are covered in more depth in our best South Africa honeymoon resorts.

The 15 most romantic places in South Africa for couples

1. Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard
Best for sunsets and a city break. The coast road from Clifton and Camps Bay to Llandudno runs between the Twelve Apostles mountains and the Atlantic, and most evenings end with the sun dropping into the ocean. Spend the days on Table Mountain, Chapman’s Peak Drive and the road to Cape Point, then come back for dinner by the sea.
Where to stay: The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa for a secluded ocean retreat beyond Camps Bay, or Ellerman House in Bantry Bay for an art-filled, very private stay. For more choice, see our Cape Town honeymoon hotels.
Best time: November to March for beach weather; April and October for quieter, still-warm days.

2. Franschhoek
Best for long lunches in a mountain valley. Franschhoek is one main street of restaurants ringed by mountains, about 75–90 minutes’ drive from Cape Town. The hop-on hop-off Wine Tram links the estates, so neither of you has to drive after a tasting.
Where to stay: La Residence for an intimate, decorative retreat with valley views, or Leeu Estates for a vineyard estate on the edge of the village. Babylonstoren, between Paarl and Franschhoek, suits couples who want a working farm, gardens and a spa on one property.
Best time: February to April for harvest season; May to August for log fires and lower rates.

3. Stellenbosch and the Helshoogte Pass
Best for a private-pool vineyard splurge. The estates on the slopes above Stellenbosch look across vineyards to the mountains, and the town is 45–60 minutes from Cape Town, close enough for a two-night anniversary escape.
Where to stay: Delaire Graff Lodges & Spa, whose lodges have private pools, with a spa and destination restaurant on the estate. Compare it with Franschhoek in our Cape Winelands honeymoon guide.
Best time: November to April for warm, dry days among the vines.

4. Hermanus and Walker Bay
Best for whale season. Hermanus, about 90 minutes from Cape Town, is one of the best places in the world to watch whales from land: southern right whales come into Walker Bay to calve from roughly June to November, with the peak around September and October. The cliff path follows the shore right through town.
Where to stay: Birkenhead House, eleven individually designed rooms on a promontory between two beach coves in Hermanus, or Grootbos Nature Reserve near Gansbaai for a forest-and-fynbos lodge above the bay.
Best time: June to November for whales; December to March for warm beach days.

5. The Cederberg
Best for wilderness without the malaria. Orange sandstone arches, clear rivers and star-filled skies, just over three and a half hours’ drive north of Cape Town, or a short charter flight. Days are guided walks to ancient San rock art, river swims and sundowners on a lookout.
Where to stay: Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat, a Relais & Châteaux lodge protecting about 130 rock-art sites, some around 1,000 years old. Rates include meals and a daily programme of guided activities, and dinner can be set under the trees or in a candlelit shepherd’s hut.
Best time: August to October for spring flowers and mild days; March to May is also pleasant. Midsummer is very hot.

6. Knysna
Best for a lagoon-and-forest Garden Route stop. Knysna’s lagoon meets the sea between two sandstone cliffs, the Knysna Heads, and the town is wrapped in indigenous forest. Take a sunset cruise on the lagoon, eat Knysna oysters at the waterfront and walk down to Noetzie beach.
Where to stay: Pezula Nature Retreat on the Eastern Head, with estuary views, a spa with a heated pool and access to the private Noetzie beach. For the most romantic room in the area, Tsala Treetop Lodge is 22 km away (see Plettenberg Bay below).
Best time: October to April; the Garden Route gets rain year-round, but the sea is warmest from December to March.

7. Plettenberg Bay
Best for beaches and a treehouse suite. Plett has the Garden Route’s best beaches and the Robberg Peninsula, a nature-reserve walk with a seal colony below the cliffs. Whales pass from roughly June to November, and dolphins are seen year-round.
Where to stay: Tsala Treetop Lodge, 10 km west of town: ten suites joined by raised wooden walkways through the forest canopy, each with its own infinity plunge pool (guests aged 10 and over). In town, The Plettenberg sits on a headland with sea views across the bay.
Best time: December to March for beach weather (busiest over Christmas); June to November for whales.

8. Sabi Sand and Greater Kruger
Best romantic safari getaway. The private reserves on Kruger’s unfenced western boundary pair guide-and-tracker game drives with lodges built for two: plunge pools, outdoor showers, bush dinners and, at some lodges, a night on a star bed. Sabi Sand is famous for close, unhurried leopard sightings.
Where to stay: Lion Sands River Lodge in Sabi Sand, whose treehouse sleep-out is a highlight when available, or Kapama Karula in Greater Kruger for contemporary suites with private plunge pools. Read our Sabi Sand honeymoon guide and Kruger honeymoon guide.
Best time: May to September for dry-season game viewing; November to March for green landscapes and newborn animals. The area carries a low-to-moderate malaria risk, so speak to a travel clinic.

9. The Panorama Route and Hazyview
Best for a scenic drive and a country-house night. Blyde River Canyon, the Three Rondavels, God’s Window and the waterfalls around Graskop and Sabie make the Panorama Route one of South Africa’s most beautiful drives, and it sits right next to the Kruger safari areas.
Where to stay: Highgrove House, a country hotel on an avocado and macadamia farm between White River and Hazyview, with eight suites (two with private plunge pools), a fine-dining restaurant and easy access to Kruger’s Phabeni and Numbi gates.
Best time: April to October for the clearest views; summer afternoons often bring mist and storms on the escarpment.

10. Madikwe
Best malaria-free safari near Johannesburg and Pretoria. Madikwe lies on the Botswana border, holds the Big Five and is malaria-free. It is about three hours’ drive or an hour’s flight from Johannesburg, which makes it the easiest safari weekend from Gauteng.
Where to stay: Madikwe Safari Lodge: three small lodges with 20 suites between them, each with a private plunge pool.
Best time: May to September for the best game viewing; it works year-round.

11. The Magaliesberg
Best romantic resort near Pretoria and Johannesburg. The Magaliesberg mountains are about an hour from both cities: dawn hot-air balloon flights, the caves of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, and country hotels set in big gardens.
Where to stay: Mount Grace Hotel & Spa, a country-house hotel and spa in 10 acres of gardens at Magaliesburg, about an hour’s drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria.
Best time: Year-round; April–May and September–October are the most comfortable months.

12. Eastern Cape private reserves
Best malaria-free safari after the Garden Route. Private reserves near Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) give you Big Five game drives with no malaria, at the natural end of a Garden Route road trip.
Where to stay: Long Lee Manor at Shamwari Private Game Reserve, a manor-house lodge roughly an hour’s drive from Gqeberha.
Best time: Year-round; May to September is cooler and drier for game drives.

13. The Drakensberg
Best for mountain air and a memorable dinner. The uKhahlamba-Drakensberg is a World Heritage Site of basalt cliffs, rivers and San rock art, with the Amphitheatre in the north among the most dramatic mountain walls in Africa. Days are hikes, trout streams and long, quiet evenings.
Where to stay: Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse in the Kamberg area: 11 rooms and multi-course dinners by owner-chef Richard Poynton, using the kitchen garden and local trout. It is booked directly with the farmhouse rather than on Expedia.
Best time: March to May and September to November; summer brings afternoon thunderstorms, and winter can bring snow to the peaks.

14. Umhlanga
Best seaside classic in KwaZulu-Natal. Warm Indian Ocean water and a lighthouse beach about 25 minutes from King Shaka International Airport. Pair it with the Drakensberg for mountains and sea in one trip.
Where to stay: The Oyster Box, a classic beachfront hotel beside the Umhlanga lighthouse, with a spa and pools.
Best time: Year-round; April to October is drier and less humid.

15. The Maputaland coast (iSimangaliso)
Best barefoot beach escape. The far north-east coast inside iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site, has forested dunes, coral reefs and freshwater Lake Sibaya behind the beach. Loggerhead and leatherback turtles come ashore to nest from November to February.
Where to stay: Thonga Beach Lodge at Mabibi: 12 thatched rooms in the dune forest above the beach, largely inclusive rates, diving, snorkelling, kayaking on Lake Sibaya and turtle tracking in season. The last stretch is a 4×4 transfer on sand tracks.
Best time: November to February for turtles; April to September for milder, drier weather.

Anniversary getaways in Cape Town
For an anniversary, Cape Town works best as two short chapters rather than one long hotel stay: two or three nights on the Atlantic Seaboard, then two nights in Franschhoek or Stellenbosch. That gives you the sea and the vineyards without spending the trip in a car.
- Watch the sunset from Table Mountain or Signal Hill. Go up late rather than at midday, and book the cableway online.
- Drive Chapman’s Peak to Cape Point, stopping at Boulders Beach for the penguins on the way back.
- Take a helicopter flight over the peninsula and the Twelve Apostles.
- Book a long estate lunch or a vineyard picnic in Franschhoek, or a Winelands day with a driver.
- Add a whale-season night in Hermanus if you travel between June and November.
- Tell the hotel it is your anniversary when you book; many will prepare a small welcome or an upgrade if one is available, but none is guaranteed.

A 10-night romantic South Africa route
- Nights 1–3: Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard.
- Night 4: Hermanus in whale season, or a fourth Cape Town night outside it.
- Nights 5–6: Franschhoek.
- Nights 7–10: fly to Sabi Sand or Greater Kruger for a plunge-pool safari lodge.
Prefer a road trip? Swap the safari for the Garden Route: Knysna, a treehouse suite near Plettenberg Bay and two malaria-free safari nights in the Eastern Cape. For full itineraries, see our Cape Town, Winelands and safari itinerary and South Africa honeymoon packages.
