Mauritius or Maldives for a honeymoon?
Mauritius and the Maldives are often shortlisted together, but they offer very different honeymoons. Mauritius is a single large volcanic island ringed by coral reef, with mountains, forests, sugar-cane fields, a vibrant food culture and dozens of high-quality resorts linked by road. The Maldives is a chain of tiny coral islands where each resort is its own island, reached by seaplane or speedboat, and life revolves around the lagoon.

Beaches and water
The Maldives wins on water clarity and the sheer quantity of lagoon. Its beaches are almost uniformly white and soft, and reefs are often a short swim from your villa. Mauritius has beautiful beaches too — especially on the east coast at Belle Mare and Trou d’Eau Douce, and on the calmer west coast around Le Morne, one of the island’s UNESCO-listed sites (Le Morne Cultural Landscape) — but the quality varies more by location and season, and winter trade winds make some coasts breezy.
Resorts and honeymoon style
Mauritius has one of the strongest resort scenes in the Indian Ocean, with dozens of polished five-star properties, many all-inclusive plans and generous honeymoon offers. Overwater villas are rare (Constance Prince Maurice has junior suites and villas on stilts over its lagoon), but beachfront suites and pool villas are plentiful. The Maldives specialises in the overwater villa, and because each resort occupies its own island, privacy is exceptional. The trade-off is that you are tied to one resort’s restaurants and prices. We compare 20 of them, with Expedia prices, adults-only ages and all-inclusive costs, in our best Mauritius honeymoon resorts guide; for trip shapes, see Mauritius honeymoon packages.
Which is better value?
Mauritius is usually the better value. Road transfers are inexpensive, all-inclusive plans are competitively priced, and there is a wide range of four- and five-star resorts. In the Maldives, seaplane or speedboat transfers and resort-only dining add significantly to the room rate, so the same length of stay generally costs more. For detailed budgets, see our Mauritius honeymoon cost guide.
Best time to go
Mauritius is at its best from May to December, the drier and cooler season; January to April is hot and humid, with a risk of cyclones. The Maldives is best from December to April in the dry season, with wetter, windier weather from May to November. That makes them complementary: Mauritius for a mid-year honeymoon, the Maldives for a winter one. See the best time for a Mauritius honeymoon.
Adding a safari
Mauritius is one of the easiest islands to combine with Africa. There are direct flights from Johannesburg and Nairobi, so a Big Five safari followed by a lagoon resort is simple to arrange. Popular options include South Africa and Mauritius, Kenya and Mauritius, Tanzania and Mauritius and Botswana and Mauritius. The Maldives is a long way from Africa and usually works best as a standalone trip.
Our verdict
If the overwater villa is the dream and budget allows, choose the Maldives. For most couples, though, Mauritius offers more for the money: excellent resorts, a real island to explore, easy logistics and the option to begin with a safari. Still deciding?
