Lamu is the most distinctive honeymoon destination on the Kenyan coast. It does not feel like a conventional beach resort. Instead, the appeal is a mix of Swahili culture, narrow streets, carved doors, rooftop terraces, boats and long sandy beaches around Shela. For couples who want atmosphere and privacy rather than a polished resort strip, it can be unforgettable.

Lamu Town or Shela?

Lamu Town is richer in history and local life, while Shela is the better honeymoon base for most couples. Shela has the beach, beautiful private houses, a quieter pace and easy access to dhow trips. You can visit Lamu Town during the day without giving up the more relaxed beach setting.

Where to stay

Private houses are one of Lamu’s signature honeymoon experiences. Many come with staff and rooftop spaces, giving you a level of privacy that is difficult to find in a standard resort. Boutique hotels are another good option if you prefer service and simplicity over having an entire house.

Lamu Old Town

Lamu Old Town is recognised by UNESCO as the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa. Donkeys and boats replace cars, and the narrow lanes are lined with coral-stone houses, carved wooden doors and hidden courtyards. The town is predominantly Muslim, so dress modestly when walking around, especially away from the waterfront. Visit in the cooler morning, stop for fresh juice on the seafront and return to Shela by boat for the afternoon.

Getting to Lamu

Scheduled domestic flights connect Nairobi with Manda Island’s airstrip, typically in under two hours, and some routes link Lamu with Malindi and the Maasai Mara. From Manda, a boat takes you across the channel to Lamu Town or Shela in minutes, and most hotels and houses arrange the transfer. Road travel to Lamu is not recommended for honeymooners.

Best time to visit

January to March and July to October are generally the strongest weather windows. November and early December can be good value. April and May are wetter and less reliable. Lamu also has local festivals and holiday periods that can change availability and atmosphere dramatically.

What a Lamu honeymoon costs

Boutique rooms can start around US$150–300 per night per couple, while staffed private houses vary enormously depending on size, location and season. A small private house can be excellent value for honeymooners because it gives you space, service and privacy without the price structure of a luxury resort.

Practical considerations

Lamu requires a little more planning than Diani. Flights are the normal way to arrive, followed by boat transfers. Government travel advice for parts of coastal Kenya can change, and some policies may affect insurance, so check official guidance for your nationality and exact itinerary before booking.

Best safari pairing

Lamu is especially rewarding after a more active safari. Four nights in the Maasai Mara plus five or six nights in Shela gives the honeymoon two completely different moods. For a premium trip, add Laikipia between Nairobi and the coast.
