Lake Malawi is 580km long, deep enough to have waves and horizons, and clear enough that you can see your feet in ten metres of water. It holds more fish species than any other lake on earth — hundreds of brilliantly coloured cichlids that make snorkelling here genuinely worthwhile. It looks and behaves like a tropical sea, except it is warm, fresh, and has no tides, no salt and no sharks.

Where to go
Likoma Island
The honeymoon destination in Malawi. A small island near the Mozambican shore, with a startlingly large Anglican cathedral, baobabs, empty beaches and a handful of excellent lodges. Kaya Mawa on Likoma is regularly named among the most romantic hotels in the world — stone-and-thatch rooms built into the rocks, several with private plunge pools and their own beach access. Reached by light aircraft.
Nkhata Bay and the northern lakeshore
The most scenic mainland stretch, where forested hills drop into the water. Good diving and snorkelling, and simpler, cheaper lodges than the islands.
Cape Maclear and Lake Malawi National Park
The world’s first freshwater national park, in the south. Excellent snorkelling among the cichlids, kayaking to small islands, and easy access from Lilongwe or Blantyre.
Liwonde National Park
Malawi’s best safari, and much improved after major rewilding. Elephants, hippos in the Shire River, and reintroduced lion, cheetah and black rhino. Game viewing by boat along the river is the highlight and is genuinely different from a vehicle safari. Three nights.
Majete Wildlife Reserve
A conservation success story: poached to near-emptiness by the early 2000s, now a Big Five reserve after a long reintroduction programme. Quieter than Liwonde and a good addition if you want the full five.
Mount Mulanje and the Zomba Plateau
For couples who like walking. Mulanje is a huge granite massif rising abruptly from tea estates, with hiking and streams to swim in. The tea country around it is beautiful and almost never visited.

Practical details
Getting there
Lilongwe and Blantyre connect via Nairobi, Addis Ababa and Johannesburg. There are no direct flights from Europe. Internal light aircraft link Lilongwe with Likoma, Liwonde and Club Makokola on the lake.
Visas and entry
Most nationalities including UK, EU and US citizens need a visa, obtainable on arrival or online in advance through the Malawian e-visa portal. Applying in advance is faster. Yellow fever proof is required if arriving from a country with risk.
Health
Malaria is present throughout and prophylaxis is recommended. Bilharzia in the lake is covered above. Medical facilities are limited, so travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is important, particularly if you are staying on an island.
Why it is called the warm heart of Africa
It is a tourism slogan, but in this case an accurate one. Malawi is consistently described by travellers as the friendliest country in the region, and it is safe and politically stable by regional standards. It is also very poor, and the contrast between lodge and village is stark. Lodges that employ and buy locally are worth choosing deliberately here.
Worth asking for
- A room with private beach access on Likoma. Several exist and they are the reason to come.
- A boat safari on the Shire River in Liwonde — better than the game drives.
- A dhow or sunset sail on the lake.
- Snorkelling among the cichlids — take a mask even if you do not dive; the fish are extraordinary in a metre of water.
- A bilharzia treatment plan agreed with your travel clinic before you go.
- Fly rather than drive to Likoma unless you actively want the ferry adventure.
Malawi Honeymoon Questions
Is Lake Malawi safe to swim in?
Yes, with one caveat. There are no sharks, no tides and no salt, and the water is clear and warm. Bilharzia, a parasitic infection, is present in parts of the lake. It is not a dramatic risk — almost everyone swims, and it is treated with a single course of praziquantel, which residents and lodges routinely take six to eight weeks after exposure. Deeper, rocky, wave-exposed sites away from reed beds and villages carry lower risk. Discuss a treatment plan with a travel clinic before you go rather than avoiding the water.
How much does a Malawi honeymoon cost?

When is the best time to visit Malawi?
May to October. May to August is dry and cooler with clear lake water and comfortable temperatures, though highland nights get cold. September and October are hot with the best game viewing, as animals concentrate along the Shire River, and the lake is at its warmest. Avoid January to March, the heavy rains, when some lodges close and the lake can be choppy and less clear.
What can we combine Malawi with?
Zambia is the strongest pairing. Five nights of walking safari in South Luangwa followed by nine on Likoma Island gives you a world-class safari and a beach week for less than Botswana alone would cost. Tanzania also works, though the flights are less direct. Malawi is small enough that it does not really need a second country, and its own combination of Liwonde and the lake is a complete honeymoon in itself.
