Inside Clouds Estate: A Honeymoon Above the Winelands
A quiet wine-estate retreat, a private jacuzzi or a pool shared by just two suites — and one midnight honeymoon memory the team will never forget. General Manager Marika Kok shares her advice for couples.

For couples who picture vineyard landscapes rather than a busy town, Clouds Estate offers a different approach to a Cape Winelands honeymoon: quiet accommodation on a working wine estate, overlooking the mountains of the Banhoek Valley.
In this exclusive written interview for honeymoons.africa, Marika Kok, General Manager of Clouds Estate, gives concise, practical advice on the hotel’s two honeymoon-friendly room types, the most pleasant travel months and the experiences she recommends in Stellenbosch and neighbouring Franschhoek.
01 · The setting
Quiet by design, surrounded by wine country
What makes Clouds Estate special for honeymooners?
Marika Kok: “It is quiet, in nature, on a wine estate, away from city hustle and bustle.”
The estate is on Helshoogte Pass, Stellenbosch, between the Simonsberg and Drakenstein mountains. Its official website describes it as a boutique hotel and working wine farm with its own wines and a restaurant. The setting suits couples who want to spend more time together at the property rather than step straight into a busy town centre.
What atmosphere should honeymooners expect?
Marika: “Quiet and secluded.”
That is the defining mood of the interview. Couples should choose Clouds Estate for its peaceful wine-estate setting, views and private time — with a car or arranged transport for nearby towns and wineries.
02 · Where to stay
The Pool Suite or the Superior Room?
Which room would you choose for your own honeymoon?
Marika: She names two favourites: the Pool Suite, with a heated pool shared by one other suite, or the Superior Room, with two outdoor areas and a private jacuzzi.
Pool Suite
Large, contemporary suite with access to a heated pool shared between the two Pool Suites. The pool is not exclusive to one room. A strong choice for couples who enjoy swimming and sunbathing.
Superior Room
Approximately 50 m², with a balcony and a separate deck featuring a private jacuzzi. Choose this if an outdoor soaking space that belongs only to your room matters most.

03 · Timing
Choose the quieter shoulder seasons
When is the best time for a Clouds Estate honeymoon?
Marika: “October / November or March and early April” are her preferred months, thanks to the shoulder-season balance of pleasant weather and fewer visitors.
She cautions that December to February is the busiest period. Some days can be exceptionally hot and well-known restaurants may be fully booked. If travelling over summer, book special-occasion dinners ahead rather than leaving plans until arrival.
How many nights should honeymooners book?
Marika: “At least 3 nights.”
Three nights gives couples time to enjoy the estate, make a sparkling-wine outing and explore Stellenbosch or Franschhoek without turning every day into a packed schedule. The wider Winelands can also follow a few nights in Cape Town or precede a safari; see our South Africa honeymoon itinerary.
04 · Beyond the suite
Wine tastings — and a less obvious way to see Stellenbosch
Which experience should every honeymoon couple make time for?
Marika: A sparkling-wine tour in Franschhoek, where several estates produce their own South African bottle-fermented sparkling wine (traditionally called Méthode Cap Classique or MCC), or a day on the Franschhoek Wine Tram.
Her view is that the Wine Tram makes for a fun day out together. A planned tour or private transfer also means neither person has to drive after tastings. Explore more wine-country experiences in our Cape Winelands guide.
What is one nearby experience couples often overlook?
Marika: “A food tour on foot or township tour of Stellenbosch.”
This is an alternative to another winery-focused day. Arrange a walking food tour or a community-led township visit through a reputable local operator, checking what is included, the meeting point and whether the experience supports local hosts directly.
05 · The human details
A wedding dress in the pool at midnight
Can you share a memorable honeymoon moment?
“Bride jumped in the pool with her wedding dress on at midnight.”
Marika’s brief answer needs little embellishment. It captures the spontaneous side of a stay that is otherwise described as peaceful and secluded, without identifying the couple.
How do you give honeymooners privacy while still making them feel cared for?
Marika: Listen to the couple: some want more attention than others. She recommends checking before arrival about their likes and any special requests, then ensuring the staff know what matters to them.
The hotel’s official website also says it can help arrange requests such as flowers, chocolates, in-room treatments or wine tours, subject to availability and booking arrangements.
What is most meaningful about hosting honeymooners?
Marika: “I enjoy making people’s (often too short) holidays and honeymoons perfect, making them promise to return to our hotel and country again and again.”
Her focus is on thoughtful details that turn a short visit into a stay worth repeating.
06 · Practical planning
Rates, booking and the room to request
Location: Clouds Estate, Helshoogte Road, Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa. The official site puts the hotel about 20 minutes from Franschhoek and 45 minutes from Cape Town International Airport, depending on traffic.
The hotel publishes seasonal rates for two guests. For the 15 January to 30 April 2027 high-season period, its published guide lists these room rates:
Illustrative accommodation totals using the hotel’s published 2027 rates, checked 2 November 2026, not live quotes and not inclusive of meals, tours, transport or other extras unless specifically stated by the hotel. Rates are subject to change. See the official rate table for other seasons, terms and booking conditions.
Compare the Pool Suite and Superior Room
For a honeymoon, ask about the exact room name, whether the pool or jacuzzi is shared, and any special arrangements you would like made before arrival.
