Honeymoon in Mozambique

Mozambique is what Zanzibar was thirty years ago. Two thousand five hundred kilometres of coastline, two extraordinary island archipelagos, coral reefs that have escaped the worst of global bleaching, and so few visitors that you can genuinely have a sandbank to yourselves. If your idea of a honeymoon is a beach with nobody else on it, this is the best answer in Africa.

Budget US$8,000 to US$18,000 per couple for twelve nights including flights. It costs more than Zanzibar and less than Seychelles, and the reason is logistics rather than luxury: getting to the good bits requires light aircraft or boats.

Where to go

Bazaruto Archipelago — the safe, straightforward choice

Five islands off the southern coast near Vilanculos, protected as a national park. Enormous shifting dunes, sandbanks that appear and vanish with the tide, and warm clear water. It has the highest concentration of good honeymoon lodges in the country and is easy to combine with a South African safari.

Bazaruto is also one of the last strongholds of the dugong in the western Indian Ocean, and manta rays are reliable at Two Mile Reef.

Quirimbas Archipelago — the extraordinary one

Thirty-two islands in the far north. Ibo Island has a crumbling Portuguese fort, silversmiths working in the old town and genuine atmosphere; the outer islands have barefoot lodges on sand spits with nothing else in sight. It is the most beautiful part of coastal Africa we know of — and it sits in the province with the security concerns above. Go only after checking current advice properly.

Tofo and Barra — for divers

Further south and reachable by road from Maputo or by air to Inhambane. Less polished than the archipelagos but the marine life is the draw: whale sharks year-round with a peak from October to March, and manta cleaning stations. If diving is the point of the trip rather than a nice extra, come here.

Benguerra and Medjumbe

The two names most often recommended for honeymoons specifically — Benguerra in Bazaruto, Medjumbe a tiny private island in the Quirimbas that you can walk around in fifteen minutes.

May to October is the clear answer for a honeymoon. Mozambique sits in the cyclone belt and January to March genuinely carries risk — Idai and Kenneth in 2019 were devastating.

Island lodges typically run US$400–1,200 per person per night, usually including meals and some activities. The costs that surprise people are light-aircraft transfers — budget US$300–600 per person each way to reach the islands.

Sample itineraries

Twelve nights — safari and Bazaruto (from about US$14,000 per couple)

• Nights 1–4: Sabi Sand or Kruger in South Africa.
• Night 5: Johannesburg.
• Nights 6–12: Bazaruto island lodge.

This is the classic. Big Five, then a sandbank — and the flights connect cleanly through Johannesburg.

Ten nights — beach only (from about US$9,000)

• Nights 1–5: Bazaruto.
• Nights 6–10: Tofo for diving, or a second Bazaruto island.

Fourteen nights — the north (from about US$20,000, security permitting)

• Nights 1–3: Ibo Island — the fort, silversmiths, dhow sailing.
• Nights 4–9: An outer Quirimbas island.
• Nights 10–14: Fly south to Bazaruto.

Practical details

Getting there

Almost everyone routes via Johannesburg, then flies to Vilanculos (Bazaruto) or Pemba (Quirimbas). Maputo has some direct links to Lisbon and Johannesburg. Island transfers are by light aircraft, helicopter or boat, and baggage limits on the small planes are strict — typically 20kg in soft bags.

Visas and entry

Mozambique abolished visa requirements for many nationalities in 2023, including UK, EU, US, Canadian and Australian passport holders arriving as tourists. This is a relatively recent change and older guidance online still says otherwise, so confirm on an official source close to your travel date. Yellow fever proof is required if arriving from a country with risk.

Health

Malaria is present throughout the coastal areas including the islands, and prophylaxis is strongly recommended. Medical facilities outside Maputo are limited — travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is essential here more than almost anywhere else on this site, because the islands are a long way from a hospital.

Diving

Check your insurance covers the depths you plan. Nitrox is available at the better lodges. If either of you is not certified, several island lodges run PADI open water courses over four days, which is a genuinely good use of a honeymoon week.

Worth asking for

• A dhow safari — sailing between islands and sleeping on deck or on a beach. The most romantic thing Mozambique offers.
• A sandbank picnic. Lodges will drop you on a bank that only exists at low tide, with a hamper and an umbrella, and collect you hours later.
• Two Mile Reef for manta rays if you are in Bazaruto.
• Confirm which meals and drinks are included — island lodges vary a lot and there is nowhere else to eat.
• Comprehensive evacuation cover in writing before you fly.
